1. Check Gutters & Downspouts
After the last frost has passed, it’s important to have your gutters and downspouts cleaned and repaired. Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause the wood trim at the eaves to rot, and that can invite all kinds of critters into your attic space.
2. Fix Outdoor Cracks
Freezing and thawing is rough on concrete, asphalt and other hardscaping materials. Take a walk around your property to look for damage to walkways, paths and driveways, and schedule repairs as needed. Asphalt can often be patched, but damaged concrete may need to be replaced entirely.
3. Examine Roof & Chimney
Storms can take quite a toll on the roof. When spring arrives, start by making a simple visual inspection of your roof and chimney. If you see any signs of damage be sure to call an inspector to take a better look at the issue.
4. Check Power Equipment
Away goes the snow blower and in comes the lawn mower! The last thing you want to happen when you bring out the lawn tools is to find out they are no longer working. It only takes 5 minutes to check and will save you a trip to a small engine mechanic in the future when everyone is buying them!
5. Replace Furnace Filter & Schedule Air-Conditioning Service
Just because it gets cool doesn’t mean it’s working efficiently. To get the longest life out of your cooling system and keep it running as efficiently as possible, change the filters at least once each season (every 3 months), and hire a licensed professional to service the equipment before the start of summer.
6. Adjust Your Thermostat
Adjusting your thermostat for the warmer months is essential. If you have a smart thermostat you'll want to program it for the new season. Say goodbye to the high heat!
7. Clean Kitchen Exhaust Hood & Filter
Over time, your kitchen hood fan filter may become so blocked with grease that it loses its effectiveness, which is why it’s important to clean these filters periodically. Clean the filter in your sink with just boiling water, baking soda, and a good de-greasing dish soap.
8. Check Foundation For Cracks & Leaks
You want to make sure water is not entering your home through foundation cracks. Doing a quick walk around your homes foundation to check for cracks can save you money in the long run.
9. Check Attic For Leaks, Mold, Moisture, Fire Hazards & Critters
During the cooler months some critters love to find warmth in attics and small spaces in your home. If needed, hire a professional to inspect your home.
10. Test Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
This is something that should be done every month to ensure the safety of not only your home but your family. Replacing old alarms and detectors is also a must if yours is expired or broken in any way.
