Get rid of unnecessary “stuff”
Have you heard of Marie Kondo? When preparing to move, the best practise is to throw out, donate or re-organise everything that you have not used in a long time. This will ensure that you are not bringing junk to your new home. Moving to a new house with less stuff will make it feel like a fresh start.
Research professional moving companies
Although it might save you a lot of money to have you friends and family help you move and pack, it can be a big stress to a lot of people. Have professionals do the work for you will ensure that everything gets to your new home safely and unbroken.
Create a moving to-do list
Having a list handy will make it much easier to not forget to do anything. Most people now have smartphones so the best way to not lose your list is to keep it in your phone. You can even create a shared list with your husband, wife and kids!
Get use out of your calendar
Have a calendar that you never use? Now is the time to start! To make sure that nothing is forgotten, mark it down on your calendar. Having even the little things written out can make the whole moving process less stressful.
Free moving boxes
Moving boxes can get very expensive if you have a lot of stuff to pack. Consider checking Kijiji or Facebook market place for cheap or free moving boxes. A lot of people will give away their used boxes when done. Just remember to do the same when your move is complete!
Fragile items
One of the best tips we’ve come across is to use your towels, dish cloths or blankets to pack fragile items. This will not only save you on spending money on packing paper or bubble wrap but will also help you fit more in one box. Just remember to wash everything when done!
Overnight bag
The night after you move, you will most likely not want to start unpacking everything all at once. The best way to make sure that you have the essentials for the first few days is to pack an overnight bag. This includes your toiletries, phone chargers and any other essentials you may need.
Groceries
Stop buying groceries the week before you move. To save yourself from having to throw away food that’s needs to be refrigerated. Keep perishable foods all in the same box.
Cleaning products
Set aside your cleaning products for moving day. You will most likely want to do some light cleaning before you start unpacking all your boxes. Having a box or bag of basic cleaning products handy will make it faster for everyone to help out with cleaning!
Loading the truck
If you are loading the moving truck on your own here are a few tips. Load all your heavy items first, such as sofas and large boxes. Have one person in charge of placement of where everything should go in the truck. This person should be the Tetris master! You want to make sure that you’re using up all the space you can efficiently. Don’t be afraid to flip things over. Any boxes that are not fragile or furniture can be rotated to make more room.
